First, I hope you know that as a creator, you have the power to terraform new world for humanity to exist in. You are a documentarian of the present but also a channel for the future. You are our scry, creating portals for us to envision possibilities and ideas that we might not otherwise have fathomed on our own. The expression of your creative voice reveals to us experiences that provoke introspection, examination of who we are individually, while also reminding us of our shared humanity. The bounds of what you can create for yourself and for others are as infinite as the expanse of the universe itself. You are the access point.
Second, I want you to remember that you are an artist, so you need to own it. You don’t need art school or gallery representation to validate your identity as the “artist”. You get to decide what kind of life and career you want. You’re in the driver seat as they say. You can also make whatever the….well…you know… whatever you want. So do it. You don’t need permission from anyone but yourself, honestly. You might need more material resources or opportunities to bring your creation into existence but you do not need to permission from any external source, to just start. Trust your creative voice and where you muses lead. Develop trust and abide by your own definition of success. And finally to my fellow artists whom society marginalizes and tokenizes, those who navigate intersecting identities in the system that oppress them, please allow your art to take up as much space as you deem necessary. Take up every ounce of space you can unapologetically and know I’m right here next to you doing the same.
